Salvador Calvano
Curly Hair Stylist & Hair Color Expert
Everyone has heard the old sayings “It’s in his blood,” and “He was born to be …” In Salvador Calvano’s case, it’s true on both counts. His parents met in beauty school and owned Cutter’s Hair – a Phoenix landmark on Camelback Road – for more than 28 years. So it seems it was inevitable that Salvador would follow in his parents’ footsteps. But what is really impressive is how this remarkably talented young man has stepped out to make his own indelible mark in the industry – and how he continues to expand his path.
Shortly after finishing his training at his father’s beauty school, Salvador set out on his own, armed with passion, ambition and a burning desire to make the world more beautiful by making people look and feel beautiful. Barely out of his teen years, he set about honing his skills in fashion hot spots like Miami, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York City.
It was in New York City that Salvador’s career and his portfolio really took off. He slipped naturally into a world of high fashion, trendsetters, designers and supermodels; magazines, runway shows, celebrities, rock stars and world-class photographers, without ever losing his sense of self or his traditional values.
Coming Full Circle
The tragic events of September 11, 2001 shook the world to its very core. And after ten years of living and working in New York City and abroad, Salvador was ready for a change. “9/11 sealed the deal.” On September 21, he packed everything he owned into a truck and returned to his hometown and his family.
Salvador was determined to use his experiences in the high fashion world to set new standards for hair and fashion in Phoenix. In 2002, his dream became a reality when the Salvador Calvano salon opened its doors in an historic building on 7th Street at Sheridan a few blocks south of Thomas Road.
“Looking back, I have very few regrets,” says Salvador. “Sure, my past is full of wonderful memories, but I’m really excited about making a difference right here where I grew up. There’s a kind of beautiful symmetry in ending up where you started. Fundamentally changed, but fundamentally unchanged.
After so many years, he’s come full circle. Salvador Calvano calls Phoenix home. I Love my life in Phoenix and the fact that I can go back to New York City for Fashion week gives me the best of both worlds.
My studio is a sanctuary of Peace and Beauty. It is my home away from home and I invite you to experience the difference.
